From what age should a child see a dentist in Melaka?
Earlier than most parents expect. The first visit is about getting used to the clinic, not treatment.
Ooi Dental sees children from six months old, or as soon as the first tooth appears, at both Melaka clinics. The first visit is short and gentle: a look in the mouth, a ride in the chair, and advice for parents. Nothing is done on the day unless something needs attention.
Why six months
The first teeth usually appear around six months, and habits that decide whether they stay healthy start then: night feeds, bottles in bed, what goes in the sippy cup.
A visit at this age is mostly a conversation with the parent. We check the teeth that have come through, look at how the jaw is developing, and go through cleaning, feeding and dummy or thumb habits before any of them cause a problem. Decay in baby teeth matters: those teeth hold the space for the adult teeth underneath, and a child who loses one early can end up with crowding later.
What happens at a child's first visit
A look, a count, a ride in the chair, and a chat. Most first visits at Ooi Dental are short and involve no treatment.
We start with the child on the parent's lap or in the chair, whichever they prefer. The dentist counts the teeth out loud, looks at the gums and the bite, and shows the child the mirror and the light. Parents get straight answers on brushing, fluoride toothpaste and snacks.
If something does need attention, we explain it and book it as a separate visit. The first visit is not the time to start treatment on a child who has only just met us.
How often should children come back
Every six months for most children, the same as adults. Children with early decay, braces or a sweet diet may be asked to come more often.
Regular short visits do two things: they catch decay while a small filling is all that is needed, and they make the clinic a normal place rather than somewhere you go when something hurts. Children who come every six months from a young age rarely need anything done under pressure.

My child is scared of the dentist
That is normal, and it is our job, not the child's. Come early, come often, and let the first visit be a visit with nothing done.
Tell us before you arrive if your child is anxious or has had a bad experience elsewhere. We go at the child's pace: chair up, chair down, count the teeth, done. If you are nervous yourself, it helps to keep your own visit calm; children read the room. A toothache is different: a child in pain is seen the same day.
Booking a visit for a child
WhatsApp the clinic closer to you. Walk-ins are welcome and usually seen within 30 minutes, but for a first visit a quiet booked slot is kinder.
Kota Laksamana is open 9:00am to 6:00pm daily, Taman Lagenda 10:00am to 7:00pm daily. Bring your IC and, if another clinic referred you, the referral letter. Ooi Dental does not publish fees; you will be told the cost before anything is done. More on walk-ins and what to bring.
Common questions

No. The first visit is a look and a conversation. Nothing is done on the day unless something needs attention, and that is booked separately.
Every six months for most children. More often if there is early decay, braces or a very sweet diet.
Walk-ins are welcome and usually seen within 30 minutes. For a first visit, a booked slot at a quiet time is easier on the child.
